CAUSES OF DEVELOPING PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE;
Periodontal disease tends to develop from the lifestyle and medical health issues of an individual. A number of risk factors are associated to onset of periodontal disease including; smoking, diabetes and other illnesses, treatment and management methods from diseases such as cancer and AIDS, certain medications and hormonal changes in young women.
Developing some form of periodontal disease is highly common amongst adults in the United States despite reasons of medical heath issues or being a non-smoker. Periodontal disease is simply inflammation of the gums which develops from bacteria surrounding the mouth. These bacteria form a ‘plaque’ on the teeth and can harden and form a ‘tartar’ which cannot be brushed at home and requires professional cleaning from a dentist. Plaque and tartar that is not treated causes onset of gingivitis which causes the gums to become red and swollen making them bleed easily. Fortunately, gingivitis is common amongst young adults and can be treated at home with regular brushing and flossing of the teeth while also paying regular visits to a dental hygienist. If gingivitis is not treated earlier, periodontitis develops causing the gums to pull away from the teeth and as a result form infectious pockets which allow the bacteria to spread and break down the bone and connective tissues surrounding the teeth, eventually leading to complete removal of the teeth.
PERIODONTAL TREATMENTS AVAILABLE AT KEENE DENTISTRY & IMPLANTS
Our skilled team of periodontists has a wide array of subtle to major treatment options available to treat periodontal disease. We offer less invasive non-surgical procedures which include scaling; the removal of tartar above and below the gum line and root planning used to clean the root surfaces of the teeth. Reliant on the patient’s condition, lasers maybe utilized for the removal of plaque and tartar while also prescribing antimicrobial medications for full treatment. Progression of periodontal disease where non-surgical procedures have failed requires a minor surgical procedure where a small ‘flap’ is made in the gum tissue enabling removal of infectious tissue and bacteria from an infected pocket. The healthy gum tissue is then able to heal naturally. Periodontal disease can erode the bone and tissues surrounding the teeth leading to tooth loss. Our periodontist specialists may recommend regenerative procedures including, bone and gum grafts to repair damaged tissue around the teeth and preserve healthy teeth. We prioritize in informing all patients how to maintain good oral hygiene by regularly brushing and flossing the teeth to prevent any onset of gum disease.
